Depictions of the Stations of the Cross painted by 14 worshippers at London’s Hampstead Parish Church are being auctioned to raise funds for mission in Brazil.

The paintings will be on display at the Parish Church of St John-at-Hampstead every day, between 9am and 5pm, until 4 April (Holy Saturday) – with sealed bids invited for most of the paintings.

Money raised by the auction will go towards the work of USPG Mission Companion the Revd Nicholas Wheeler, who is spearheading community work in the City of God, a disadvantaged suburb of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Revd James Walters, curate of St John-at-Hampstead, said: ‘Fr Nicholas has been well-known in this part of London for many years as he was formerly the Rector of Old St Pancras. So we’re delighted that our commitment to USPG is helping him to develop his extraordinary ministry.

‘USPG reminds us in this privileged part of London that we are a global church. As we prayed at these Stations of the Cross each Friday, we remember the church in the poor communities of Brazil.’

The Stations of the Cross depict Christ’s final journey as he carries his cross to Calvary.

'God’s kingdom is made up of many voices and talents'

James said: ‘The Stations in St John have been painted by 14 different members of our congregation, from professional artists to children at our school. Each brings their own distinct style and perspective on the scene. Taken together, this collection shows that God’s kingdom is made up of many voices and talents.’

One of the images, by retired navy captain Anthony Hutton, represents ‘Jesus falls the second time’ – and shows the different reactions of onlookers, ranging from sympathy to repulsion (pictured above).

Another painting – tipped to receive the highest bids – is by much-exhibited artist Alf Löhr, whose abstract paintings are currently on display at the Adam Gallery in Cork Street, London.
